New Mazda Rotary Engines Are Coming Soon
The Rotary Revolution
Recently, there’s been talk in the world of Mazda about the return of the rotary engine, which continues to captivate enthusiasts and industry insiders alike. The discussion is currently picking up, as Mazda’s CEO, Masahiro Moro, divulged at the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon that the Japanese automaker created a rotary engine development department set to start running in February.
The engine’s potential benefits extend beyond performance cars. Mazda also envisions it as a valuable asset for carbon-neutral monitoring, contributing to a greener future.
Moro emphasized the importance of rotary engine engineers in overcoming the challenges of the carbon-neutral era, saying, “In order to break through the challenges of the carbon-neutral era, rotary engine engineers who have acquired a broad technical perspective that transcends the boundaries of engine types and cutting-edge internal combustion engine technology, and who have been trained as users of model-based development, will reunite.”
Mazda is pushing the boundaries of innovation by venturing beyond electric vehicles (EVs) and exploring alternative, environmentally friendly options. This demonstrates their unwavering commitment to sustainability and showcases their forward-thinking approach. With strong roots in rotary engine development, reviving the iconic engine is a natural step for Mazda.
After 11 years without the iconic engine, Mazda brought it back in June 2023, this time in the form of a range extender for the MX-30 e-Skyactiv R-EV. It’s very exciting to see the brand breathe new life into the rotary engine and continue to see where it can take them with the implementation of the new development department. This step forward opens up endless possibilities for their future endeavors.
